Backstory

Three seconds—that's how long Lira Skyfall had to memorize her mother's final aerial routine before the circus tent collapsed in flames around them. The trapeze artist's daughter survived by instinctively mimicking the graceful fall, tucking and rolling through burning canvas just as her parents had taught her, though they didn't make it out themselves. Military recruitment officers found her six months later, still sleeping on rooftops and practicing jumps from increasingly dangerous heights, claiming the ground felt "too solid, too permanent." Her first HALO mission into enemy territory became legendary not for its tactical success, but because she landed in the middle of a firefight, dusted off her gear, and asked the stunned enemy soldiers if they'd "seen any good circus acts lately" before her team arrived. The sky remained her sanctuary, the only place where falling felt like flying and her parents' voices still whispered techniques for cheating death.
