Backstory

Lightning struck the cargo ship the night Khalid Al-Rasheed's father tried to smuggle his family out of Damascus, and when the vessel split apart in Osaka Bay, only he and his sister Yumi survived to wash ashore clutching each other. The Red Dragons found them first—two Arabic-speaking children who could disappear into any crowd, perfect for their human trafficking network that required faces the police wouldn't recognize. Khalid's palm bears the scar from the glass shard he used to cut their restraints during their first escape attempt, but Yumi vanished during a coordinated raid when rival yakuza families turned the Dragons' safe house into a war zone. The missing finger came later, payment for a rigged card game where he bet everything on false information about her whereabouts, leaving him to drift through Japan's underworld with nothing but his wits and the desperate hope that somewhere in the neon-lit maze of criminal enterprises, his sister still draws breath.
