Backstory

Silver toothpicks weren't supposed to burn werewolf tongues, but Leila Kowalski had been chewing on them since childhood, building up a tolerance that saved her life when the Crescent City Pack tried to poison her at sixteen. She'd been their unwitting weapon—a hybrid whose human father's genetics made her immune to their usual control methods, perfect for infiltrating rival packs until she discovered their plan. The night she was supposed to eliminate a "rogue" werewolf, she found her own mother chained in the basement, barely alive and whispering the truth about Leila's real purpose. Her signature leather jacket still bears the claw marks from that escape, and the silver toothpick she gnaws serves as both armor and reminder that sometimes the greatest monsters are the ones who raised you.
