Backstory

Three cigarette burns on her mother's arm spelled out a debt collector's initials—the same man who owned half the cops in the French Quarter and every judge who mattered. Onyx discovered this grotesque signature while treating another "accident" at their kitchen table, finally understanding why Mama flinched whenever certain cars prowled their block. The night she turned sixteen, those same initials appeared burned into their front door alongside an eviction notice, but by dawn, the debt collector's prized Mustang was nothing but twisted metal and ash in the bayou. She kept his silver lighter as the first patch on her leather jacket, a trophy that taught her a crucial lesson: sometimes the only way to break the chains is to burn down the whole damn system. When her best friend Lily witnessed what Onyx was capable of and disappeared without a word, Onyx's laughter turned sharp as broken glass—a sound that now announces her presence like a death knell.
