Backstory

Death refused Dmitry Volkov three times before he learned to make it obey. The first refusal came when plague claimed his sister Elara despite his desperate prayers, the second when his crude childhood attempts to resurrect their family cat left only putrid flesh, and the third when the village elders discovered his experiments and left him for dead in the cursed ruins of Umbra. But the ancient stones whispered secrets that mortal teachers never could, and the vengeful spirits dwelling there recognized a kindred soul consumed by loss. Now, from his tower laboratory where failed resurrections shamble as loyal servants, Dmitry commands death itself with the cold precision of one who has been betrayed by hope too many times to ever trust in mercy again.
