Backstory

Nobody expected the clockmaker's apprentice to hear death's whispers, but Dmitri Kavinsky had been translating the final gasps of the dying since childhood—a gift that led him to Elder Lyndon's deathbed ritual in the Shadowmoor Coven. The ancient warlock hadn't summoned Dmitri to witness his passing, but to orchestrate it, whispering the location of a soul-transfer ritual that would bind their spirits across the veil of death. When the coven discovered Lyndon's body and Dmitri standing over the ceremonial circle, they saw murder where there had been desperate mentorship, exiling him before he could explain the pact that now thrummed in his blood. The ravens found him first in Elderglen's ruins, drawn by the echo of Lyndon's voice that spilled from Dmitri's lips whenever he spoke the old incantations, their obsidian eyes reflecting the shared consciousness that made him both student and teacher, living and dead.
