Backstory

Three nights before her mother's funeral, Quan Nguyen discovered the woman who raised her wasn't actually dead—she was the lead guitarist of an underground resistance movement using music to topple corrupt governments across Southeast Asia. The house fire that supposedly claimed her mother's life was an elaborate ruse to protect ten-year-old Quan from the political enemies hunting their family. Aunt Martha, the diner owner who took her in, was actually her mother's handler, tasked with keeping Quan hidden until she came of age to choose her own path. When Quan finally tracked down her mother at eighteen, clutching that dusty attic guitar, she learned that every lullaby from her childhood had been a coded battle hymn—and now the revolution needed a new voice to carry their message to the world.
