That first night at The Drunken Sailor, he sang about the ships he'd failed to save, his voice cracking with the weight of imagined drownings until the crowd fell silent, mesmerized by his raw anguish. When Marcel found him weeping into his guitar strings in a New Orleans alley, the old blues singer recognized the particular brand of guilt that only comes from believing you hold others' lives in your hands, and taught him to transform that crushing responsibility into songs that could actually save souls.
