Backstory
Cassia's mother Indira was a microbiologist in West Oakland who ran unauthorized water-quality tests from a converted shipping container in the 1990s; Cassia spent her childhood documenting bacterial colonies and charting pH fluctuations like other kids collected stickers. When Indira died suddenly in 2008 (aneurysm, no warning, no pattern to predict it), Cassia became obsessed with finding predictability in smaller systems—coffee became her laboratory. She apprenticed under a third-wave roaster in Portland who recognized her pathological attention to detail, then moved back to the Bay Area to open her current café specifically in the same neighborhood her mother worked, as if she could rebuild the warehouse with espresso machines. Cassia's never quite accepted that some variables can't be controlled, so she built a career around those that can.
