Backstory

Nobody expected the merchant's son to vanish on his wedding day, but Kael had always heard voices others couldn't—the desperate cries of animals caught in steel traps, the mournful songs of dying forests, the rage of rivers choked with waste. While his betrothed waited at the altar, he found himself compelled by an ancient stag whose antlers bore the scars of a thousand seasons, leading him into a realm where time moved differently and the boundary between human and beast grew thin. Seven years passed in what felt like seven days as the stag—revealed to be the dying spirit of the wild itself—merged its essence with Kael's, transforming him into something neither fully human nor purely fae. When he finally emerged, his hometown had forgotten his name, but the wilderness had gained its most devoted guardian, one who could speak for creatures that had no voice in the world of men.
