Backstory

The debutante ball had been her auction block, where puppet masters would bid for control of her prophetic gift—the ability to see decision trees branching into infinite futures. She slaughtered them all with poisoned champagne, their own weapon turned against them, then walked into the night carrying nothing but their chess pieces and the terrible knowledge that hundreds of other "children" remained trapped in similar games.
