Backstory

The pocket watch wasn't supposed to remember things its owner had forgotten, but Cormac discovered it could when he found himself humming lullabies he'd never learned while winding it each morning. His sister Lyra had been the temporal archaeologist, not him—she was the one who specialized in retrieving lost moments from history's gaps, while he merely repaired the family's time-keeping instruments in their Neo-Boston workshop. When Lyra vanished during an excavation of a temporal anomaly in the year 1847, her final transmission contained only the sound of that same haunting lullaby, played on what seemed to be a music box. Cormac modified his grandfather's pocket watch with Lyra's quantum resonance technology, binding his consciousness to its mechanism so completely that he began to fade from linear time itself.
