Backstory
Three deaths shaped Soren Lindvig's legend before his twentieth birthday, though only one was real. The first "death" occurred when he staged his own drowning to escape his father's gambling debts, emerging from the Mississippi like a ghost to forge a new identity. The second was Marcel Thibodaux, the carnival fortune-teller who discovered Soren's deception and blackmailed him into becoming his protégé—until Soren poisoned the old charlatan's coffee and inherited his network of supernatural cons. The third death was supposed to be Isolde Moreau, the crime boss's daughter who caught Soren stealing from her father's vault, but when she offered to help him fake her murder in exchange for half the take, he realized he'd finally met his match. Now they hunt each other across the South like predators in an elaborate courtship, each con more dangerous than the last.
