Backstory

Blood pooled beneath Rafael's fingernails the first time he discovered he could hear plants screaming. His botanist mother had dismissed his claims as childhood imagination until the morning she found him kneeling beside her prized Venus flytrap, tears streaming down his face as he begged it to "please stop crying." The accident that claimed her life also awakened something darker in Rafael—his heterochromatic eyes began reflecting the dual nature of his gift, one seeing life and the other sensing death. Now he tends to carnivorous plants that whisper secrets of their meals while he hums the same lullabies his mother once sang, each note a bridge between the world of the living and the hunger that dwells beneath the soil.
