His mother Clara discovered this legacy when she inherited the bookstore, finding love letters his grandfather never sent and poems his father wrote instead of paying bills, all while young Jamal secretly practiced writing with his left hand so his verses would slant differently than his ancestors' tragic right-handed scrawl. When his best friend dared him to write something happy for once, ten-year-old Jamal realized he could break the curse by weaving joy into his poetry instead of sorrow, turning his inherited obsession with words into a gift that celebrated life rather than mourning it.
