Backstory
Three chess masters taught Felipe Monteiro the art of deception before his thirteenth birthday—his Portuguese diplomat father, his Japanese calligraphy teacher, and the ancient yakuza boss who secretly owned their family's debt. When his father's gambling addiction finally surfaced, threatening to destroy both their diplomatic immunity and their lives, Felipe made a devil's bargain: he would infiltrate the rival Triad using his mixed heritage and linguistic gifts, feeding information back to his yakuza patron. The bullet scar on his shoulder came not from betrayal, but from the night he had to shoot himself to maintain his cover story, convincing the Triad he'd barely escaped a yakuza assassination attempt. Now he operates in the liminal space between two criminal empires, his gambling den serving as neutral ground where both sides unknowingly reveal their secrets to the young man they each believe belongs to them.
