Backstory

Music boxes weren't supposed to scream, but the antique one Hiroshi inherited from his synesthete grandmother did exactly that—its melodies manifesting as colors that revealed hidden messages only he could decipher. Each opera tune she'd hummed corresponded to a specific chromatic code, leading him to discover that she'd been a "literary archaeologist" who rescued books from temporal anomalies before they could be erased from history entirely. The mismatched socks aren't a quirk but a necessity—each pair contains threads from different time periods that ground him when he ventures into the library's impossible sections that exist between Tuesday and Wednesday. Now Hiroshi continues her work, humming Puccini to unlock doorways that shouldn't exist, curating a collection of books that haven't been written yet and stories that forgot they were real. Whiskers, it turns out, is an excellent judge of which patrons are actually from this decade.
