Backstory

Nobody expected the imperial court's most promising young scholar to steal the Emperor's private collection of execution records, but Kai Matsushita had discovered something extraordinary within those yellowed documents—each condemned soul's final words contained fragments of an ancient necromantic cipher. When the plague claimed his parents three days before his planned graduation, he used those decoded death-whispers to attempt their resurrection, only to watch in horror as twisted shadows wearing their faces clawed from the earth instead. The traumatic failure shattered his sanity but awakened an insatiable hunger for death magic, driving him to collect the skulls of those false resurrections as gruesome reminders of his inadequacy. Now he wanders as an insomniac exile, obsessively seeking the missing pieces of that imperial cipher, believing that mastering its complete form will finally grant him the power to undo his catastrophic mistake and truly bring back those he loves.
