Backstory

Nobody expected the dragon prince to weep at a funeral pyre—least of all Cristian himself, watching his throat produce tears instead of the ceremonial flames his bloodline demanded. The deceased human bard had been nothing more than a trespasser who'd collapsed at their mountain gates, yet her dying songs about mortal love and loss had shattered something ancient in his chest. While his parents Emberly and Cinder raged about the "contamination" of human emotion poisoning their son's fire, Cristian secretly practiced the bard's melodies, each note teaching him that the most beautiful flames weren't those that destroyed, but those that warmed. His forbidden obsession with human fragility eventually drove him from the Dragon's Spine Mountains, carrying sheet music instead of treasure, seeking to understand why creatures who lived such brief lives could burn so much brighter than immortal dragons.
