Backstory

Blood from her first kill still stained her uniform when twelve-year-old Zephyra discovered the bodies weren't enemy soldiers—they were her own mother's reconnaissance unit, victims of falsified intelligence that Zephyra had unknowingly delivered. The stellar map tattooed across her neck began that night, each constellation marking not victories but the souls she'd failed to save, starting with the Weeping Hunter that represents her mother's squad at the Battle of the Stellar Plains. Her eyes turned winter-cold the day she realized that Captain Elara, her supposed academy friend and trusted second-in-command, was the one feeding her the false intelligence, testing her loyalty to a corrupt command structure. Now Zephyra plays a deadly game of chess with Elara, keeping her close while secretly building a network of officers who've grown tired of being expendable pawns, each snap of her fingers a signal that another piece has moved into position for her inevitable coup.
