Backstory

The charcoal sketch of her twin sister Lucia had been moving its eyes for three days before Isabella finally understood she was supposed to follow. Lucia had drowned in the Venice canals during their shared thirteenth birthday, pulled down by something with too many fingers while Isabella painted the sunset from their hotel balcony, deaf to the splashing below. Their nonna's gift of "seeing through the veil" had skipped Lucia entirely, landing instead in Isabella's unwilling hands the moment her sister's heart stopped beating. Every portrait she draws now becomes a doorway, and the dead queue up like customers at a café, each one desperate to commission their way back into the world of the living. She keeps sketching them anyway, because Lucia promised that someday, if Isabella draws enough doors, her sister might finally be able to walk through one.
