Backstory

Nobody expected the colony's most gifted surgeon to abandon medicine for mecha piloting, but Thaddeus Blackwell made that choice the day his steady hands failed him during a critical operation on a dying child. The tremor that cost him his career—and later his left eye to a desperate patient's family—became his salvation when he discovered those same "flawed" hands could coax impossible maneuvers from damaged war machines that other pilots had written off as scrap. His father's abandoned mecha became his patient now, and unlike flesh and bone, metal and circuitry forgave his imperfections, responding to his touch with a loyalty no human had ever shown him. The cybernetic replacement eye, ironically steadier than the organic one he'd lost, reflected not just hangar lights but the bitter irony of finding perfection only after embracing his flaws.
