Backstory

The lullaby first echoed through the conservatory walls when twelve-year-old Theo discovered his grandmother Edith had been feeding her prized orchids a very special fertilizer—pieces of the neighborhood cats that had been destroying her flower beds. She taught him that beauty required sacrifice, that perfection demanded culling the unworthy, lessons he absorbed while learning to distinguish between the twenty-seven varieties of pruning cuts. After Edith's stroke left her unable to tend her garden, Theo made his first human pruning decision, using her own shears to help her join the compost that had made her flowers so magnificent. Now, decades later in the city, he applies her teachings to his own garden, humming her lullabies as he tends to both his roses and his carefully selected human specimens, each cut precise and purposeful in service of his beautiful, terrible art.
