Backstory

Three bodies lay before her when the plague ships first docked—her younger brother among them, burning with fever from a disease that turned blood to black sludge. Sable had stolen her mother Dr. Lyra Kim's forbidden research notes, discovering that the "incurable" hemorrhagic plague could be treated with a cocktail of battlefield stimulants and street narcotics, a combination no respectable physician would dare attempt. She saved her brother that night, but the underground clinics she began running in Kaelum's sewers put her family in the crosshairs of both the medical establishment and the criminal syndicates who controlled the drug trade. After Lyra died defending one of Sable's illegal clinics from a syndicate raid, Sable emerged from the underground to train under Dr. Orion Trueheart, her surgical skills now legendary among Kaelum's outcasts who still hum the melodies she once sang to keep patients calm during operations without anesthesia.
